Strengthening People Leadership at Stanair

Empowering Managers and Senior Leaders with people-focused leadership skills to improve team motivation, confidence, and collaboration across depots.

Client: Stanair Industrial Door Services Ltd
Focus: Empowering Managers and Senior Leaders with people-focused leadership skills to improve team motivation, confidence, and collaboration across depots.
Format: A series of four tailored, interactive in-person workshops followed by 1:1 Executive Coaching sessions for continued leadership development.

Stanair Industrial Door Services LTD of Kettering, Milton Keynes, Peterborough and Rugby wanted development work for their depot Managers and Senior staff members to build on the Human Resources process and procedures training this group received and to focus more on their people skills. As an ‘Investors in People’ company for over 20 years, these Managers and Senior staff members were very experienced within the company but their Director, Wayne Thompson contacted Sam as he’d identified an opportunity to increase the Managers’ confidence to deal with the individuals and situations that occurred within their teams but also to consider different ways to engage and motivate staff for better results in customer service, sales and efficiency.

For Wayne Thompson, his intention was “through investing in these workshops, we’re looking to increase manager’s confidence in managing and leading our people so Stanair can deliver our customer promises as we efficiently grow our business success in the next 5 years and beyond.”

Sam designed 4 workshops to deliver this outcome; uniquely and appropriately crafted for Stanair’s culture as a well-established and successful business, with great employee stability and a close family-like feel in each depot. With many different team dynamics at play given various job roles and knowledge levels: like surveyors, engineers, administrators as well as employees and apprentices new to these roles as well, the Managers needed nor just one fixed method but to consider a range of approaches to vary their response to the situation and the individual employee concerned. Each workshop included interactive discussions, mixing appropriate theory and learning models but facilitated by Sam to draw on the team’s real experiences so learning is rooted in reality to bring it’s relevance to life, creating more impact and bringing greater self-awareness for the leaders. The workshop content meant improvements in knowledge on feedback and performance management, how to engage and motivate teams or individuals, focusing on delivery of better results and accountability as well as improving communication across all levels.

Feedback from the Managers on the workshops, confirmed Sam’s training had increased their own confidence in their capability to manage and lead their teams so achieved Wayne’s main aim. It also enabled them to work more closely as one management team across all depots, moving forward from a more siloed approach meaning sharing best practise is now delivering productivity improvements and satisfying their customers and shareholders to a greater extent.

Here’s some of the Manager’s feedback on their workshop participation: “I’ve learnt different ways to handle situations”, “Extremely helpful. Has had positive impact on management team.” “Easier to deal with other depot managers since.” “100% improved my confidence”, “Helped using real situations to bring it to life”. Lots of comments on the value of having dedicated time together to learn and develop, working as one team.

For 2025, Sam’s delivered 2 more management workshops and moves into 1-2-1 development for the Managers to enable refinement of their new skills and to deepen their understanding even further. Sam’s also working with the MD and Directors as their Executive Coach to continue Stanair’s higher level growth plans.
